The 14-year-old station at Central Avenue and Van Buren Street now boasts considerably more seating, new lighting, solar panels, additional office space and a revamped plumbing system, as well many other upgrades.
An especially relevant change, in light of Phoenix’s sweltering summer temperatures, is expanded shade area. Fabric and hardcover canopies, ramadas, large trees and vertical screens were installed to keep waiting riders out of the sun. Additional convenient water fountains were incorporated in the waiting area.

The station’s antiquated security system also has been updated.
Though keeping riders happy was the renovation team’s primary objective, planners wanted to implement changes that would reduce energy usage and save the city money, according to Pawar.
“Traditionally, the focus used to be more on the upfront cost of the building,” Pawar said. “But, over the last few years, everybody has recognized that there is sound investment in things like LED (energy-efficient light-emitting diode) lighting, which may cost a little more initially but will last a lot longer.”
